Wet Pavement at Twilight

Cornelia Drive / Edina / MN / 2014

The street lights came on one evening when I was walking around an elementary school in my neighborhood. All of sudden there were shadows of oak leaves on the wet path cast by street lights beaming through the oak trees lining the street. For the background, I chose metallic acrylic paint to resemble the wet surface that I was walking on. Two nights later, I brought the painted canvas to the same spot and placed a tarp on the edge of the street and traced the shadows falling on the canvas. I was there about a half hour when a school custodian came out and shouted, “What in the world are you doing?” I had to assure him that I wouldn’t get any paint on the newly poured sidewalk. .
