I spend a considerable amount of time looking underfoot as I walk outside nearly every day of the year.
My Road Work series began with the act of picking up an olive green, Italian made, woman’s flat in the middle of a busy road. I followed my intuition that a shoe with a broken heel had potential as a found object. When I discovered that it was also my shoe size, it became an even better find. Over the years, when I am out walking, I find myself scanning roadsides and sidewalks for found objects, which I can use as components in my art, or for future props.
┌Road Work is the confluence
of my seasonal walking and hiking adventures as well as my painting endeavors.┘
My Road Work series of eight acrylic painting assemblages is laid out in the chronological order of how the paintings were created. The backgrounds alternate from blacktopped surfaces to concrete surfaces. Surprise elements and a bit of humor are found in my 3D paintings. Each painting begins with an initial plan, but in the end there is always some mystery.
I am planning on taking my Road Work series on the road. Soon, I will be contacting MnDOT headquarters and their regional offices to see if they have an interest in my exhibit. Since we all drive on roads every day, I trust you will find some visual inspiration in the subject matter of my paintings. Besides the air we breathe, roads are another common denominator in our lives. All items picked up off of the road have been sprayed with Basic G-germicide. If an item looks dirty, you are looking at paint that created that effect. Thank you.
